An Aspiring Entrepreneur’s Declaration of Independence

Today calls for a special blog post… Independence Day — that’s the formal name of the holiday we celebrate on the Fourth of July. Independence has been a goal of Americans since the founding of our country. Those of us who want to be entrepreneurs are particularly more eager to be independent. No matter what it takes to start and run a successful business, to us it’s the only route to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”
So, don’t let your job rule your life any longer – depriving you of your time with your family and friends, your sense of security and well-being, your creativity, sometimes even your health. If you find yourself enslaved by your job, then it’s time for you to come up with your own Declaration of Independence. While these objectives may not be as mighty as those set out by Thomas Jefferson, here are a few goals to seek in your own Declaration of Independence:
Independence from 40 (in most cases 50, 60 or even 80 in many) hour slavery weeks. Don’t work for the man, work for yourself. Take your fate in your own hands. Set yourself free!
Independence to pursue your own vision. Is your job, your dream job? Did you always want to do, what you do? If not, declare your independence and start working on your vision and dreams. Life is too short to waste a second of it, why waste years of your valuable life, doing something you don’t like or want to do.
Independence from overly-powerful colleagues, tyrant boss, and parasite coworkers. Declare your independence and set yourself free from “pleasing the boss” life and get rid of those dominating colleagues and parasite coworkers who have been freeloading at your time and cost.
Independence from terrible commute. Do you really like that early-morning-half-asleep train commute or that 10mph drive in the rush hour? If not, declare your independence, start your business and work from home or close to home.
Independence from bureaucracy, paperwork, office politics, and the sour work environment. Do you really care about the petty office politics, gossips, poking around personal lives of bosses and coworkers? Do you really care about the memo written for another memo? Do you really enjoy the polarized work environment, you’re currently working in? If not, declare your independence and start building a much positive and healthy environment around you. Surround yourself with positive, competent, and helpful people and you’ll see the difference.
Independence from constant insecurity. “I have a steady job and monthly pay check…” Who are you kidding? Look around, someone (and in fact many) from your family, friends and neighbors have been laid off… They also thought “I have a steady job and monthly pay check” until they were let go… Accept the fact that no job is a secure job.
Most importantly, independence to be independent. Freedom is the most important thing in life, appreciate it, and do not lose it. Take time to appreciate little things in life, take time to appreciate things money can’t buy, independence is one of them. Today is the best day to write your own Declaration of Independence and start working towards your independence. So, print this one or write your own and pin it on your desk and start making efforts for an independent, secure, happier, and healthier life.
Here’s to everyone’s independence…
Have a safe and fun fourth!!
